England manager Gareth Southgate has reaffirmed the major role Raheem Sterling will play in the side despite speculation he could have been dropped for the Panama match.
pic5678  Sterling, 23, produced an underwhelming performance in England’s opening Group G match against Tunisia, as the Three Lions struggled past their North African counterparts.
But, despite controversial reports he was set to be dropped for England’s game against Panama in favour of Marcus Rashford, the Manchester City man started in the 6-1 win.
Sterling was substituted off in the 68th minute against Tunisia, with the Three Lions chasing victory after he frustrated for large parts of the game.
His replacement, Marcus Rashford, transformed the tempo of England’s play upon his introduction, and from there Southgate’s men would go on to win the match.
But the Manchester City man did play a role in the win over Panama, setting up Jesse Lingard for his excellent strike.

Croatia midfielder Ivan Perisic feels the current crop of superstars can emulate the achievements of the national team 20 years ago.
Despite enduring patchy form heading into the tournament, Zlatko Dalic’s side have progressed to the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time since 1998 after an impressive 3-0 dismantling of Argentina.
pic5678  Following the struggles of several more high-profile countries, their odds of lifting the trophy will have shortened significantly after they backed up a comfortable 2-0 opening-game triumph against Nigeria with a result that signalled their intention to go one better than their compatriots’ semi-final finish in France.
Many Croats believe the country is witnessing a ‘golden generation’ and Perisic thinks the squad could surpass the team that last wore that tag.
“We’re on the right track to emulate what we did in France ’98 and must continue like this,” he told Mediaset, as reported by Goal.
“We did really well [against Argentina]. In the locker room, we said we had to defend stoutly and we did that.
“We had chances in the first half too, then the goals arrived after the break. We have six points, we deserved them and now we want to beat Iceland too.”
Ante Rebic opened the scoring against Jorge Sampaoli’s side, capitalising on a horribly scuffed clearance from Willy Caballero to volley home impressively from close range.

Cristiano Ronaldo has disclosed why he is growing a beard during this summer’s World Cup finals.
pic5678 The 33-year-old Portuguese forward raised a few eyebrows after putting the European champions in front against Spain a game that ultimately ended 3-3 with the Real Madrid man bagging yet another hat-trick.
Ronaldo, not renowned for sporting facial hair, was seen to rub his chin many took it as a subtle dig towards rival Lionel Messi – the Argentine playmaker is widely considered by many observers as the “G.O.A.T” (greatest of all time) – but that could not be further from the truth.
“This goatee? It’s a joke I had with [Ricardo] Quaresma,” he said in a post match interview following Portugal’s 1-0 victory over Morocco with him proving to be the difference once more.
“We were in the sauna [before Friday’s match against Spain] and I started to shave and I left the goatee – I said if I score tomorrow I would leave it for the rest of the tournament. And it gave me luck, I scored that game, I scored this one, so it stays.”

Former Argentina striker Hernan Crespo has stated that it is impossible to compare current star Lionel Messi with football legend Diego Maradona.
sbo333 Messi was involved in Argentina’s opening match against Iceland, which saw the two sides draw 1-1 despite the South Americans being strong favourites going into the game.
The Barcelona legend capped off a disappointing display by missing a penalty, which would have secured his side their first three points of the tournament.
Maradona – who is often referred to as the greatest ever footballer – was able to win the World Cup with Argentina back in 1986.
For Crespo, it is impossible for the Argentinians to put the same weight of pressure and expectation on Messi due to a variety of factors.
Speaking to reporters (via calciomercato) Crespo said: “He’s a phenomenon if he’s put in the right conditions, like in Barcelona, otherwise it’s hard for him.
“Let’s start from a fact. Messi, as a vote, deserves 5. If he had scored the penalty, I would have given him a 6. Of course we expect more from him, but here the talk is broadened.
“Messi is not Maradona, he doesn’t win a World Cup by himself.

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mario Gotze has hit out at his former Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola, claiming he lacks empathy.
Gotze, 26, won two consecutive Bundesliga titles with the Bavarians under the guidance of current Manchester City manager Guardiola, though he was very critical of the Catalan coach’s understanding of human emotions.
pic5678  The Memmingen-born native was full of praise for Guardiola in terms of his knowledge of the game and technical ability as a coach, but Gotze believes he lacks the requisite compassion to be considered a truly world-class coach.
Instead Gotze hailed his former Dortmund manager and the current Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp, who he gave a glowing account of for teaching the then-young German midfielder everything he knows about football.
“I’m still in touch with Jürgen,” Gotze told DAZN, according to bundesliga.com.
“Of course, he taught me everything about professional football. At that time, I was just 17 and coming up from the youth team. He introduced me to everything. He let me play.”

After the relegation of Stoke City last season, the departure of Swiss star Xherdan Shaqiri seems all but certain.   And with reports suggesting the player has a relegation clause in his contract, the exit of the former-Bayern man is basically academic.
sbo333 But with two years left on his contract, and media outlets suggesting he will cost more than the £12m stipulated in his release clause, who will be the club most likely to go in for him, and where will he want to go?  He’s said himself that he’d like to stay in the Premier League, so, with that being said, here’s where we think Xherdan Shaqiri might end up.
Dream: Liverpool
Liverpool are the club that, at the time of writing, seem to be most interested in the signature of Shaqiri. It’s not hard to see why: though he hasn’t really lived up to his reputation as an elite talent while in Staffordshire, he still has the propensity to change games.   The Reds need to add quality depth to their brilliant attacking three of Mane, Firmino and Salah – noticeable last term was the steep drop off in attacking verve when one or more of them were absent. Shaqiri could be the first sub on for anyone of those three.

Bayern Munich defender Mats Hummels has revealed how he was “on the brink” of joining Premier League side Manchester United back in 2015.
pic5678 The German centre-back was playing for Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund at the time and was regarded as one of the most sought-after defenders in European football.
So much so, that German giants Bayern signed the now 29-year-old for around £31.5m with Hummels signing a five-year contract at the club.
However, according to Hummels, it could have been so different.
Speaking to reporters (via Sportbild), Hummels stated that he was just moments away from agreeing a deal to join Manchester United, with a late breakdown in negotiations stopping him from joining the Old Trafford side.
“I had these thoughts—was deep in talks with Manchester United in 2015 among other things. I was on the brink of going abroad,” he said.
“There were various possibilities in 2016, as well. It wouldn’t be right to say that I haven’t given it any thought.
“It was quite interesting. But we just never came to terms. But I’m also not dead set on going abroad either.”

Felix Gotze, the brother of Mario Gotze, has left Bayern Munich to join FC Augsburg for an undisclosed fee.
sbo333 The 20-year-old right-back, who can also play as a centre-back and in midfield, signed a professional deal with Bayern last summer but didn’t make a single senior appearance for the Bundesliga champions.
Gotze had been with Bayern since 2014 and made five appearances in the UEFA Youth League last term, scoring one goal and providing one assist.
Augsburg finished 12th in the Bundesliga in 2017/18, taking 41 points from their 34 matches.
Gotze is the club’s third summer signing following the arrivals of Andre Hahn from Hamburg and Julian Schieber from Hertha Berlin.
Speaking to Augsburg’s official website about the deal, club director Stefan Reuter said: “We are happy to welcome Felix Gotze, a talented young player, to FC Augsburg.
“He is very willing to learn and already well educated, so we believe that he can take his next steps as a professional here.”
Gotze himself said: “I watched closely at FC Augsburg and saw how much confidence young players have here. Therefore, I think that the change to Augsburg is just the thing [for me] to be able to develop as best as possible.”

Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema attributed his opening goal in the Champions League final down to hard work and not luck.
The Frenchman was in the right place to deflect Loris Karius’s attempted throw out back into the Liverpool net to give Real Madrid the lead in Kiev but refutes the suggestion that the freak goal was simply a matter of luck.
pic5678  According to Benzema, who has been left out of Didier Deschamps French World Cup squad, it was his hard work that got him that goal on a night to forget for the Liverpool ‘keeper.
Real Madrid won the game 3-1 to become the first side since the 1970s to win three Champions League titles back-to-back, but two of Madrid’s goals came from woeful errors from Liverpool’s German stopper.
The first of those came when he attempted to throw the ball out, underarm, to a defender only for Karim Benzema to stick out a foot and deflect the ball back past the ‘keeper.
After the final whistle, much of the analysis has put the goal down to poor play by Karius and luck.
However, speaking to Kuwaiti television it is clear that this is not an opinion shared by the goal scorer.

Former Arsenal striker and cult hero Nicklas Bendtner has been left out of Denmark’s 23-man squad for the World Cup.
The 30-year-old had been included in the initial 35-man provisional roster named by Denmark coach Age Hareide for the tournament.
pic5678  But his involvement had been in doubt following a groin injury he picked up while playing for current club side Rosenborg before joining up with the Denmark team.
And now, after missing Denmark’s 0-0 draw with Sweden on Saturday, the striker has not made the cut for the Danes travelling to Russia.
In losing Bendtner, Denmark will be without one of their best active scorers, with the striker having scored 30 goals for his country – more than any other available for selection. Though his tally is still some way off the record 52 set by Poul Nielsen and Jon Dahl Tomasson.
Denmark kick off their World Cup campaign against Peru in Group C before facing Australia and France.

Egypt coach Hector Cuper is confident star man Mohamed Salah will be fit in time for the World Cup.
The Liverpool forward sustained a shoulder injury after a challenge by Sergio Ramos in last Saturday’s Champions League final, with Real Madrid going on to defeat Jurgen Klopp’s men 3-1.
pic5678  There were fears that Salah would miss this summer’s showpiece, after a season when he scored a record-breaking 32 Premier League goals, as well as netting 11 times in Europe.
However, Cuper feels there is every chance the 25-year-old will play some part in Russia.
“We are optimistic, and every medical report says he will make it,” the former Argentina international said.
“But we still have to prepare for any situation that could happen before we start.”
Egypt are the second-highest ranked side in Group A after Uruguay, with Saudi Arabia and hosts Russia their other opponents.
Salah was the highest scorer in the African section of World Cup qualification with five goals, with the Pharaohs assuring themselves of a place at this summer’s tournament with a last-gasp win against Congo in October last year.
